Fast Food Phenomenon and Its Impact on Consumer Health

Friday, October 14, 2011

Advancement of science and technology is growing rapidly in various fields, including in food sector, these technological advances bring both positive and negative. The positive impact of these technologies can improve the quantity and quality of food, also increases diversification, hygiene, sanitation, practical and more economical. The negative impact of these technological advances were large enough for the health of consumers by the use of harmful additives. The way of life today is characterized by the high cost of living, emancipation or for some other reason causing the woman to work outside the home. Statistical data in 2002 showed that women who work in the labor force totaled 33.06 million or 44.23% of the total number of women aged between 15-60 years. Women as housewives and others by profession working outside the home, due to limited time and busy, and the difficulty of finding maids causing fast food becomes the main menu daily at home. The rhythm of life that demands all things fast-paced, time-limited, the child must go to school while the mother and father should immediately go to work, as a shortcut for breakfast then fast food provided that the preparation takes 3 to 5 minutes. During the day home from school, mother and father still work at the office, the kids come back to enjoy this fast food. In addition to this easy to prepare foods generally have a savory taste and is generally preferred, especially by children of school age. Another problem in the community so the phenomenon was the availability of packaged snacks that can be ascertained "rich" additive. Recorded 13 kinds of snacks containing additives is high enough. The question that arises is the extent to which such additive materials consumed and accumulated in the body, how the impact of health? And how the actions of consumers, especially the mother-housewife in choosing, safe food processing, hygienic, well-nourished and healthy family members? Fast Food
Fast food in question is the type of foods that are packed, easy to prepare, practical, or treated with a simple way. These foods are generally produced by the food processing industry with high technology and provide a variety of additives to preserve and give flavor to the product. Fast food is usually in the form of side dishes in the packaging, instant noodles, nuggets, or even corn flakes as food for breakfast. Substances Food Additives Additives are chemicals that are mixed into the food with the aim of improving quality, adding a sense of freshness and solidify the product. Food packaging Food packaging is the container or the food to the food quality remains good, improve product performance, and ease of transportation. Healthy Healthy functioning of body organs are physiologically normal. In food consumption from the consumers not only evaluate the flavor and nutritional value but also consider the influence of food on health and fitness, or reduce the negative effects of an illness, and if possible to cure the disease. Types of Packaging Materials and Food Additives According to Majeed (1996) these additives can be divided into several groups based on their intended use, namely: 1) agent emulsion additive that is made from fat and water for example lecithin 2) stabilizing agent and pemekat eg alginate and glycerin, 3) barrier agents crust to prevent clumping , 4) agents increased nutrients eg vitamins, 5) agents for example preservatives nitrate and nitrite salts, 6) an antioxidant agent eg vitamins C and E; BHT (Butylated Hydroxy-toluene) and BHA (Butylated Hydroxy-anisole), 7) agent developer for bread and cake, 8) flavoring agent example monosodium glutamate (MSG), 9) dye. In addition to the above additives Denfer ninth (2001) also stated there are other ingredients are added in the diet include: 1) laxative agent, 2) animal fat, 3) marinade ingredients, 4) material separator, 5) modified starch, 6) alcohol, and 7) gelatin. In addition to the materials mentioned above involving the use, size and the rules have been determined according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI), which we should be aware of is the presence of dyes and preservatives that are added are not for food use such as, borak and formalin as a preservative that has been reported by Suriawiria (2003). Where 86.2% wet noodle was allegedly found in the market and supermarkets contain formalin. The color red in the paste 50% is using Rhodamin B dye that should be used for textiles. In addition Rhodamin also commonly given in syrup to create a red color. Packaging Food Ready to Eat Until now, according to Chairman of the Indonesian Packaging Federation in Indonesia Hengky Darmawan new packaging system 10% of the corresponding rules of SNI. The selection must consider the type of food-grade packaging and food safety (Kompas, 2003). Several factors affect manufacturers in selecting packaging is to look nice, can protect the packaged product, and economic considerations. Materials used for this form of plastic or Styrofoam (packing instant noodles and nuggets), PVC (polyvinyl clorida for wrapping confectionery), cans (food fruit, milk, food side dishes). Impact of Fast Food Benefits Fast Food Eating fast food is outstanding at this time recorded 500-600 types (Media Indonesia, 2003). This type consists of beverages and foods that are produced in small and large scale. The availability of fast food, this will allow the selection of foods, food variety, food quality and practical. Danger Fast Food World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) states that the potential threat of food residues on human health is divided into 3 categories, namely: 1) toxicological aspects, categories of food residues that can be toxic to the organs of the body, 2) aspects of microbiology, microbes in food ingredients that can upset the balance of microbes in the digestive tract, 3) imunopatologis aspect, the presence of residues that can lower immunity. Negative impact on the health of these additives may directly or indirectly, in the short and long term. Efforts to Minimize Negative Impact To reduce and minimize the negative impacts of food additives can be attempted in several ways, among others: 1. Internally Reduce consumption of prepared foods, increasing consumption of vegetables and fruits as well as taking vitamins. Some vitamins thought to contain substances antikarsinogen include Vitamins A, C, E found in many vegetables and fruits; folic acid found in broccoli, spinach and asparagus: Beta-carotene, Vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin D in the active form (1.25-hydroxy) there in butter, milk, egg yolks, liver, rice and fish. Giving meaning to the family about the dangers of additives, supervise, control, administration and use of spending money and getting used to bring food from home healthy 2. in External Producers; necessary awareness and responsibility of manufacturers toward the use of food additives are produced, providing clear information, including the composition of food additives that are added Government; exercise supervision and crack down on manufacturers who violate the rules and regulations. Continue the activities of PMT-AS (Supplementary Food Program-School Children) by making use of local food sources. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs); facilitate the formation of consumer groups, encourage community participation as a watchdog of public policy, global policy anticipates that impact on consumers, to supervise and act as a defender of consumers

baby healty : Are You My Mother?

Wednesday, June 8, 2011

In line with the development of the age, the higher of the necessities of life. And coupled with the emancipation of women, so many women who work outside the home. No exception for a mother. When this task concurrent housewife as a career woman. No real problem, if the mother can devote time to being a career woman and being a good mother to her children.

However, this is what happened. A mother can not be a good mother to her children. One example is not breastfeed their babies exclusively for children, but give cow's milk or formula. The reason that they often convey is that busy so not had time to give exclusive breastfeeding. Their babies were cared for by a baby sister who can only give cow's milk or formula. Their baby will never feel the benefits of breastfeeding mothers and maternal love. Baby just enjoy cow's milk.

As a good mother, a career woman is not a reason not to give exclusive breastfeeding their babies. There are solutions that can be done is to give milk milking breast milk. This milking's milk can be stored, so that any time a baby needs mother's milk can be given immediately even though there is no mother. Milking milk can be stored in special containers made of glass or plastic material that has a closed tightly.

Earlier this container is sterilized first by boiling. Once cool, the new breast milk can be poured into the container. Milking breast milk should not be too much to be saved, just for a drink that is only about 60 ml. breast milk that has been accommodated in the container, can be stored in the freezer. The freezer temperature gets colder the longer it can survive breast milk, which is about 3 months. If you want to use Milking breast milk, remove from freezer and then taken up to thaw breast milk.

After it warmed with boiling water. The trick, pour boiling water into a larger bowl of Milking breast milk container. Then place the vessel containing Milking breast milk into it. Make sure that boiling water does not enter into the Milking breast milk. If it is warm, the milk can be given to babies but have shaken first. Residual breast milk that can not last long (less than 24 hours) and can not be frozen again. This is why breast milk is provided should be sufficient.

Although Milking breast milk is not immediately given the mother, but at least the baby can feel mothers breast milk and their benefits. And more importantly, the child will feel if you are indeed her mother though indirectly baby also feel the love his mother. They are your children, so it was supposed to give breast milk to them.

Global warming is the current rise in the average temperature of Earth's oceans and atmosphere. The scientific consensus is that global warming is occurring and was initiated by human activities, especially those that increase concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. This finding is recognized by the national science academies of all the major industrialized countries and is not rejected by any scientific body of national or international standing.

An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, probably including expansion of subtropical deserts. Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely effects of the warming include more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events including heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall events, species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes, and changes in agricultural yields. Warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe, though the nature of these regional changes is uncertain. In a 4°C world, the limits for human adaptation are likely to be exceeded in many parts of the world, while the limits for adaptation for natural systems would largely be exceeded throughout the world. Hence, the ecosystem services upon which human livelihoods depend would not be preserved.

The Kyoto Protocol is aimed at stabilizing greenhouse gas concentration to prevent a "dangerous anthropogenic interference". As of May 2010, 192 states had ratified the protocol. The only members of the UNFCCC that were asked to sign the treaty but have not yet ratified it are the USA and Afghanistan. Proposed responses to global warming include mitigation to reduce emissions, adaptation to the effects of global warming, and geoengineering to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere or reflect incoming solar radiation back to space. According to a recent Gallup poll, people in most countries are more likely to attribute global warming to human activities than to natural causes. The major exception is the U.S., where nearly half the US population attributes global warming to natural causes despite overwhelming scientific opinion to the contrary.

Need Green Houses initiated

Green homes have high economic value, though not require expensive. Indonesia's traditional house has environmentally friendly design as well as cheaper.

This was conveyed Energy Efficiency Design and Architecture Engineer Tri Harso Karyono on Media Meeting with Occupancy with Integrated Green Concept on Mercantile Club Tamara Building, Jalan Sudirman Jakarta, Monday, March 23, 2009.

According to Tri, green housing does not mean expensive. Green residential architecture relies on environmentally friendly causing minimal waste. "The design extreme home Bali and Bedui," he said.

Actually, the green house is not a very difficult and expensive, but most local designers and architects have not much to know, so ignored. In addition to the use of solar power, which is quite expensive, traditional houses adopt housing may be implemented in regular housing.

Tri said, the development of green areas will benefit all parties, not only for homeowners but also for the environment and the government.

He said the government needs to step in green housing provision as set by the government of Scotland. "In Scotland the developer who claims the concept of green, but the reality could not be arrested," he said.

Tri judge, the government is too slow to apply the rules needed some regions. Big cities like Jakarta, which affected the risk of contamination is quite large, green housing needs is essential.

Chairman, Department of Environmental Health of Public Health Faculty on University of Indonesia Budi Haryanto said, environmentally friendly residential areas should be supported and the device that is also environmentally friendly.

Mass transport to reduce energy wastage. Similarly, by expanding the accessibility of pedestrian green housing to reduce the use of transport cause pollution. "But most of that happening now can only be designed residential design with private transport," he said.

Budi said the green housing concept education process must be done from the level of government until the executor (contractor). Because, often the contractor doing the construction of polluting the environment.

Examples of fact, the construction of septic tanks should have good air-tight and usually must be drained in three years. "Contractors are often built of brick septic tank where the water is seeping into the ground. so the time drain up to 7 years. Education to these bad contractors are often loose, "said Budi.

The concept of Energy Efficient Houses

A company in the United States succeeded in developing an energy efficient home. The concept of home is called Enertia Building System (www.enertia.com) can maintain the condition of the home stay warm in winter and stay cool in summer. Both day and night, the air inside the house can stay comfortably without having to spend fuel for heating or electricity for air conditioning.
An air flow and access channel, or Envelope, runs around the building, just inside the walls - creating a miniature biosphere. Here solar heated air circulates, pumping and boosting geothermal energy from beneath the house, storing it in the massive wood walls. Thermal inertia causes the house to "float" between the cycles of night and day, and even between the seasons.

Iodized salt to prevent a radioactive poison

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

As the Indonesian community, we must be quite familiar with iodized salt and benefits. That iodized salt is the spice of the kitchen that is used widely in the community are the media in addressing malnutrition Iodine Deficiency Disorders, better known in the community with mumps. Furthermore, it has been identified that people with iodine deficiency disorders have low intelligence level and low labor productivity.

However, we know if Iodine has other functions, especially with the occurrence of nuclear reactors in Fukushima conditions are still not handled. Iodine is believed to ward off nuclear radiation, radioactive, and iodized salt is an alternative. So the Japanese government asked its citizens to consume iodine to prevent radiation from nuclear reactor explosion, so the demand for iodized salt is high.

It is true, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States, said the iodine pills can prevent radioactive iodine has been dragged into the thyroid. Radioactive iodine from nuclear activities can pollute the air and the food. The thyroid gland rapidly absorbs radioactive substances and cause adverse effects. According to Professor of Chemistry from Bandung Institute of Technology, Ismunandar, Active iodine powerful enough to counteract the radioactive poison. Iodine is used as an antidote for the body system is not damaged. "In order for the thyroid gland is not exposed,"

How it can happen, Iodine is used in our body by the thyroid gland to produce hormones that are useful for the body. When the condition of the body exposed to radioactive, thyroid is likely to absorb radioactive iodine (I-131) generated by the radioactive reaction products to produce hormones. The impact allowing the destruction of the thyroid gland and cause cancer in some future year. Which is considered the best solution is to eat clean so that the possibility of iodine I-131 to be absorbed will be smaller.

However, prefers to be considered for not only salt but salt should be iodized, and even then have to be carefully as to make the thyroid gland is no longer absorb any iodine from iodized salt we should consume in large amounts and may exceed the tolerable limits of the body.

Another option that can be done and quite safe to consume potassium iodine tablets to cover the possibility of the thyroid gland to absorb I-131. Options consume iodized food certainly much better than chewing the salt is for example just from food sources such as yogurt, cow's milk, eggs, strawberries, and cheese.

Dengue Fever : How to Prevent

Monday, May 2, 2011

Dengue fever, also known as breakbone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, a characteristic morbilliform skin rash, and muscle and joint pains; in a small proportion the disease progresses to life-threatening complications such as dengue hemorrhagic fever (which may lead to severe bleeding) and dengue shock syndrome (where inadequate perfusion of tissues can cause organ dysfunction or failure and even death).
Dengue is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the Aedes genus, particularly A. aegypti. The virus exists in four different types, and an infection with one type usually gives lifelong immunity to that type, but only short-term immunity to the others. There is currently no available vaccine, but measures to reduce the habitat and the number of mosquitoes, and limiting exposure to bites, are used to decrease the incidence of dengue.
Treatment of acute dengue is supportive, using either oral or intravenous rehydration for mild or moderate disease, and intravenous fluids and blood transfusion for more severe cases. The incidence of dengue fever has increased dramatically over the last 50 years, with around 50–100 million people being infected yearly. Dengue is currently endemic in more than 110 countries. Early descriptions of the condition date from 1779, and its viral cause and the transmission were elucidated in the early 20th century. Dengue has become a worldwide problem since the Second World War.

Clinical course

The characteristic symptoms of dengue are: a sudden-onset fever, headache (typically behind the eyes), muscle and joint pains, and a rash; the alternative name for dengue, "break-bone fever", comes from the associated muscle and joints pains. The course of infection is divided into three phases: febrile, critical, and recovery.
The febrile phase involves high fevers, frequently over 40 °C (104 °F) and associated with generalized pain and a headache; this usually lasts 2–7 days. Flushed skin and some small red spots called petechiae, which are caused by broken capillaries, may occur at this point, as may some mild bleeding from mucous membranes of the mouth and nose.
The critical phase, if it occurs, follows the resolution of the high fever and typically lasts one to two days. During this phase there may be significant fluid accumulation in the chest and abdominal cavity due to increased capillary permeability and leakage. This leads to depletion of fluid from the circulation and decreased blood supply to vital organs. During this phase, organ dysfunction and severe bleeding (typically from the gastrointestinal tract) may occur. Shock and hemorrhage occur in less than 5% of all cases of dengue but those who have previously been infected with other serotypes of dengue virus ("secondary infection") have an increased risk of this.
The recovery phase occurs next, with resorption of the leaked fluid into the bloodstream. This usually occurs over a period of two to three days. The improvement is often striking, but there may be severe itching and a slow heart rate. It is during this stage that a fluid overload state may occur, which if it affects the brain may reduce the level of consciousness or cause seizures.
Management
There are no specific treatments for the dengue fever virus. Treatment depends on the symptoms, varying from oral rehydration therapy at home with close follow-up, to hospital admission with administration of intravenous fluids and/or blood transfusion. A decision for hospital admission is typically based on the presence of the "warning signs" listed in the table above, especially in those with preexisting health conditions.
Intravenous hydration is usually only needed for one or two days. The rate of fluid administration is titrated to a urinary output of 0.5–1 mL/kg/hr, stable vital signs and normalization of hematocrit. Invasive medical procedures such as nasogastric intubation, intramuscular injections and arterial punctures are avoided, in view of the bleeding risk. Acetaminophen may be used for fever and discomfort while NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and aspirin are avoided as they might aggravate the risk of bleeding. Blood transfusion is initiated early in patients presenting with unstable vital signs in the face of a decreasing hematocrit, rather than waiting for the hemoglobin concentration to decrease to some predetermined "transfusion trigger" level. Packed red blood cells or whole blood are recommended, while platelets and fresh frozen plasma are usually not.
During the recovery phase intravenous fluids are discontinued to prevent a state of fluid overload. If fluid overload occurs and vital signs are stable, stopping further fluid may be all that is needed. If a person is outside of the critical phase, a loop diuretic such as furosemide may be used to eliminate excess fluid from the circulation.

Prevention of Dengue Fever

To prevent dengue, mosquito transmission (Aedes aegypti) must be eliminated, because vacsin for prevention are not yet available
1) Proper way to eradicate Aedes aegypti mosquito-larvae is to eradicate the breeding grounds.
2) Therefore there breeding grounds in homes and public places, then every family should regularly carry out environmental hygiene at least once a week
3) Bathtub drain at least 1 week
4) Seal water reservoirs
5) Replace vase water / water plants once a week
6) Changing the drinking water of birds
7) Hoarding used goods that can hold water
8) Sowing Abete powder or altosid in places that are difficult drained water reservoirs or in areas with clean water scarce, so we need rainwater
Abate dose: 1 tablespoon pressed (+ 10 grams) to 100 liters of water
Altosid dose: 1 / 4 teaspoon pressed (+ 2.5 grams) to 100 liters
9) Keeping fish in places where water reservoirs
10) fogging with mosquito killer drug in mosquito breeding. required to kill adult mosquitoes

Prevent Acne: How Do?

Sunday, May 1, 2011

Rubric Shaffatul Aisyiyah Magazine
The reader says:

Doctor, why can arise acne? How do I prevent this?
dr. Maftuhah Nurbeti says:

Most of us are always thinking about 'bumps / pimples on the face' when someone mentions the word acne. Whereas a pimples or bumps on the face there are various. Acne is still only a cosmetic problem only, in the sense that no significant physical abnormalities. Only, sometimes acne problems can affect our feelings towards ourselves, which can cause a decline in confidence or even depression. Especially the teens.
This all started from an acne lesion on the skin that much known as blackheads. Blackheads itself is actually a line from the oil glands are covered by oil, skin cells are already dead, as well as bacteria. Blackheads are not visible by eye, quietly waiting under the surface of our skin until there are specific conditions that support them to grow into an inflamed lesion. Therefore, then we know there are white heads blackheads (closed skin) or a black-headed (dirty and not covered skin).

Factors supporting the blackheads can vary, for example, free fatty acids by bacteria is made from our oil, the decline of certain oils that make the skin barrier function is reduced and more hollow, an increase in sex hormones, hair follicle destruction of the skin due to trauma such as in pressed excessive, abrasive wash, chemical peeling, or just a tough, dry oil 'poke' bag wall.

Blackheads can also be exacerbated by a skin condition that overhidrasi. For example before the menses, use a moisturizer, or tropical conditions. It could also by caused by contact with certain substances contained in cosmetics.
Effect of makeup or cosmetic is not too important, because most of the cosmetics on the market are usually non-komedogenik and will not clog the pores of our skin. So, when buying cosmetics, make sure the product is non-komedogenik, oil free or water based, and makes no allergies. However, the very best cosmetics, if used in heavy or busy activity, such as during exercise, it could be a walk in the skin and into the skin. So better do not wear cosmetics during exercise.

Exposure to sunlight will not help acne. Initially a small amount of sun exposure to fix a way of acne. Stain so do not look because the skin becomes darker. In contrast, long exposure to sunlight will lead to clogged pores due to exfoliation of dead skin cells will be faster. Prolonged exposure to sun can also darken hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin color) after inflammation. The longer exposure to sunlight, then it is likely to be damaged and acne skin that marks will increase.

So the recipe to prevent blackheads/acne are:

1) properly washed (1-2 times a day),

2) keep away from oily cosmetic products

3) be careful in the facial (if the officer was too excited even damage),

4) using water-based makeup,

5) Do not rested your chin in hands or avoid touching the face without a proper purpose, (moreover touching acne),

6) protect the face from the sun (exp.: use hats, umbrellas, or sunscreen),

7) Do not be too concerned about diet (not to worry eat chocolate, nuts, etc. that are not proven to affect acne. Unless we ourselves look relationship between what we eat with a growing number acne),

8) keep away from the iodine (although still controversial, but some doctors say that iodine, such as exist in salt supports the existence of acne)

Paradise for Diving Lovers : Raja Ampat Islands Indonesia

Saturday, April 30, 2011

Raja Ampat Islands waters according to various sources, is one of the 10 best waters for diving sites around the world. In fact, it may also be recognized as number one for the completeness of underwater flora and fauna at this time.

There are several areas of coral reefs that are still very good condition with the percentage of live coral cover to 90%, namely in the Dampier Strait (the strait between Waigeo island and Batanta Island), Kofiau Islands, South East Misool Islands and Wayag Islands. Types of coral reefs in Raja Ampat is generally fringing reef with gentle slope to steep contour. But it was also found atoll type and type of burns or taka. In some places like the village Saondarek, when the lowest tides, coral reefs can be seen without a dive and with his own adaptation, the corals can still be alive despite being in the open air and direct sunlight.

Located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea, in Indonesia's West Papua province, Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo, and the smaller island of Kofiau. Raja Ampat is new regency which separated from Sorong regency at 2004. It encompasses more than 40,000 km² of land and sea, which also contains Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia. It is a part of the newly named West Papua (province) of Indonesia which was formerly Irian Jaya. The islands are the most northern pieces of land in the Australian continent.
According to Conservation International, marine surveys suggest that the marine life diversity in the Raja Ampat area is the highest recorded on Earth. Diversity is considerably greater than any other area sampled in the Coral Triangle composed of Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea. The Coral Triangle is the heart of the world's coral reef biodiversity, making Raja Ampat quite possibly the richest coral reef ecosystems in the world.

The area's massive coral colonies along with relatively high sea surface temperatures, also suggest that its reefs may be relatively resistant to threats like coral bleaching and coral disease, which now jeopardize the survival of other coral ecosystems around the world. The Raja Ampat islands are remote and relatively undisturbed by humans.

The high marine diversity in Raja Ampat is strongly influenced by its position between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as coral and fish larvae are more easily shared between the two oceans. Raja Ampat's coral diversity, resilience, and role as a source for larval dispersal make it a global priority for marine protection.

1,309 fish species, 537 coral species (a remarkable 96% of all scleractinia recorded from Indonesia are likely to occur in these islands), and 699 mollusk species, the variety of marine life is staggering. Some areas boast enormous schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs.

Friday, April 29, 2011

Mount Rinjani or Gunung Rinjani is an active volcano in Indonesia on the island of Lombok. Administratively the mountain is in the Regency of North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (Indonesian: Nusa Tenggara Barat, NTB). It rises to 3,726 metres (12,224 ft), making it the second highest volcano in Indonesia.
On the top of the volcano is a 6 km by 8.5 km caldera, which is filled partially by the crater lake known as Segara Anak (Child of the Sea). This lake is approximately 2000 metres above sea level and estimated at being around 200 metres deep; the caldera also contains hot springs.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MOUNTAIN RINJANI

Forests in Gunung Rinjani including heterogeneous and homogeneous forest types in certain regions. At an altitude of 1000 - 2000 masl we can find types of plants such as Beringin (Ficus superb), Garu (Dysoxylum sp), Bayur, and farm residents who planted vegetables like cabbage, peppers, onions, and potatoes. At an altitude of 2000 - 3000 masl, the dominant vegetation is the mountain pine (Casuarina junghuniana). At an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level upwards there are only a kind of grasses and perennial flowers (edelweiss). One of the exotic Mount Rinjani is the Segara Anak Lake is formed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Rinjani. The lake is situated at an altitude of 2800 meters above sea level, rich in fish and other flora and fauna. The wealth of the lake is often exploited by local residents to take fish. But one point to note here is the existence of indigenous local population so that exploitation is not to cause environmental damage. The fish are numerous in this lake are goldfish, tilapia and fish Harper. In February 2005 the team of climbers from Astacala successfully speared goldfish weighing 3.5 kg. Segara Anak Lake is trusted by the people around have a dagger that can cure the disease, also to get a cult object - a sacred object. Near the Lake Segara Anak there is a small mountain called the Baru Mountain. Rarely one can to the top of the Baru Mount even though according to the information already there is a path to get there. Could be this is because the Baru Mount is still active and out of gas. Mount Rinjani can be said to be safe from the threat of wild animals. Birds, monkeys hanging on the woods and chickens that are often encountered in the forest. After traveling about 7 hours, arrived at Pelawangan (mountain ridge) Sembalun Lawang. Location is overgrown with mountain pine (Casuarina junghuniana) This is the last station climb before heading to the summit. Pelawangan Sembalun Lawang is located right on the slopes of Segara Anakan Lake. While resting, climbers can watch as much the excotic giant lake formed by volcanic eruption of Mount Rinjani. Unfortunately the weather at this altitude is very easy to change. The attack can come suddenly mist cold weather replace heat. Quite often wind storm capable of ripping even fly tent. However, the charm of sunrise and sunset into an unforgettable moment of a lifetime.

Geography

Lombok is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, a small archipelago which, from west to east, consists of Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba and the Timor islands; all are located at the edge of the Australian continental shelf. Volcanoes in the area are formed due to the action of oceanic crusts and the movement of the shelf itself. Rinjani is one of at least 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, four of which belong to the volcanoes of the Sunda Arc trench system forming part of the Pacific Ring of Fire – a section of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and South East Asia. The islands of Lombok and Sumbawa lie in the central portion of the Sunda Arc. The Sunda Arc is home to some of the world's most dangerous and explosive volcanoes. The eruption of nearby Mount Tambora on Sumbawa is known for the most violent eruption in recorded history on 15 April 1815, with a scale 7 on the VEI.
The highlands are forest clad and mostly undeveloped. The lowlands are highly cultivated. Rice, soybeans, coffee, tobacco, cotton, cinnamon, cacao, cloves, cassava, corn, coconuts, copra, bananas and vanilla are the major crops grown in the fertile soils of the island. The slopes are populated by the indigenous Sasak population. There are also some basic tourist related activities established on Rinjani primarily in or about the village of Senaru.
Rinjani volcano on the island of Lombok rises to 3,726 metres (12,224 ft), second in height among Indonesian volcanoes only to Sumatra's Kerinci volcano. Rinjani has a steep-sided conical profile when viewed from the east, but the western side of the compound volcano is truncated by the 6 x 8.5 km, oval-shaped Segara Anak caldera. The western half of the caldera contains a 230 metre-deep lake whose crescentic form results from growth of the post-caldera cone Barujari at the eastern end of the caldera.

Rinjani National Park

The volcano and the caldera are protected by the Gunung Rinjani National Park established in 1997. Tourism is increasingly popular with trekkers able to visit the rim, make their way into the caldera or even to make the more arduous climb to the highest point; fatalities, however, are not uncommon. In July 2009 the summit route was closed due to volcanic activity at that time and subsequently reopened when the activity decreased. During early 2010 up to and including May 2010 access to Rinjani was at times again restricted due to volcanic activity.
The park is popular for mountain climbs and trekking and represents an important nature reserve and water catchement area. The park is officially 41,330 hectares within the park boundaries and includes a further 66,000 hectares of protected forest outside. The mountain and its satellites form the Mount Rinjani National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani) - officially 41,000 hectares within the park boundaries and a further 66,000 hectares of protected forest outside. In 2008, the Indonesian government proposed to UNESCO that Mount Rinjani be one of the world's official geoparks. If this was approved by UNESCO, Mount Rinjani would become the first such geological park in Indonesia.
It has been claimed that the preliminary documentation required for UNESCO registration has not received sufficient support from the Nusa Teggara Barat government offices. Among the requirements to become a geo-park sufficient information must be supplied to show that the location has sufficient and appropriate management, information services, access to educational instruction to facilitate "knowledge-based geotourism", the implementation of a sustainable regional economy, biodiversity conservation, and to have established public access to the park area.
Mount Rinjani has obtained the World Legacy Award from Conservation International and Traveller (2004), and was a finalist for Tourism for Tomorrow Awards (2005 dan 2008) from the World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC).
In December 2010, a photo of eruption of Rinjani won 2010 National Geographic Photography Contest. The photo, taken by Singaporean photographer Aaron Lim Boon Teck won the contest, and described by the judge as "best represented the craft of photography. Not only is the light subtle and beautiful, and not only is it a lovely scene, but there's a volcanic eruption going on in the background.

Visit Borobudur and the Surrounding Temples

Sunday, April 17, 2011

A beautiful tropical scenery is decorated with hundreds of archaeological temples, including two UNESCO world heritage site, Borobudur and Prambanan, is a tourist destination that makes you spellbound. Grandeur and the complexity of the temples is a separate matter to be visited.

At a time when Europe was still in the dark continent, "The Glory" in Java, have built the pillars of religion with art and culture, which is now believed to be a work of art's oldest and highest in Southeast Asia.

The value of spirituality and art Java always side by side and still exist in everyday life today.

Borobudur, or Barabudur, is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument near Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The monument comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. A main dome, located at the center of the top platform, is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa.

The monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The journey for pilgrims begins at the base of the monument and follows a path circumambulating the monument while ascending to the top through the three levels of Buddhist cosmology, namely Kāmadhātu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). During the journey the monument guides the pilgrims through a system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades.

Evidence suggests Borobudur was abandoned following the 14th-century decline of Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms in Java, and the Javanese conversion to Islam. Worldwide knowledge of its existence was sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then the British ruler of Java, who was advised of its location by native Indonesians. Borobudur has since been preserved through several restorations. The largest restoration project was undertaken between 1975 and 1982 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO, following which the monument was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Borobudur is still used for pilgrimage; once a year Buddhists in Indonesia celebrate Vesak at the monument, and Borobudur is Indonesia's single most visited tourist attraction.

Location

Approximately 40 kilometers (25 mi) northwest of Yogyakarta, Borobudur is located in an elevated area between two twin volcanoes, Sundoro-Sumbing and Merbabu-Merapi, and two rivers, the Progo and the Elo. According to local myth, the area known as Kedu Plain is a Javanese 'sacred' place and has been dubbed 'the garden of Java' due to its high agricultural fertility. Besides Borobudur, there are other Buddhist and Hindu temples in the area, including the Prambanan temples compound. During the restoration in the early 20th century, it was discovered that three Buddhist temples in the region, Borobudur, Pawon and Mendut, are lined in one straight line position. It might be accidental, but the temples' alignment is in conjunction with a native folk tale that a long time ago, there was a brick-paved road from Borobudur to Mendut with walls on both sides. The three temples (Borobudur–Pawon–Mendut) have similar architecture and ornamentation derived from the same time period, which suggests that ritual relationship between the three temples, in order to have formed a sacred unity, must have existed, although exact ritual process is yet unknown.

Unlike other temples, which were built on a flat surface, Borobudur was built on a bedrock hill, 265 m (869 ft) above sea level and 15 m (49 ft) above the floor of the dried-out paleolake. The lake's existence was the subject of intense discussion among archaeologists in the 20th century; Borobudur was thought to have been built on a lake shore or even floated on a lake. In 1931, a Dutch artist and a scholar of Hindu and Buddhist architecture, W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp, developed a theory that Kedu Plain was once a lake and Borobudur initially represented a lotus flower floating on the lake. Lotus flowers are found in almost every Buddhist work of art, often serving as a throne for buddhas and base for stupas. The architecture of Borobudur itself suggests a lotus depiction, in which Buddha postures in Borobudur symbolize the Lotus Sutra, mostly found in many Mahayana Buddhism (a school of Buddhism widely spread in the east Asia region) texts. Three circular platforms on the top are also thought to represent a lotus leaf. Nieuwenkamp's theory, however, was contested by many archaeologists because the natural environment surrounding the monument is a dry land.

Geologists, on the other hand, support Nieuwenkamp's view, pointing out clay sediments found near the site. A study of stratigraphy, sediment and pollen samples conducted in 2000 supports the existence of a paleolake environment near Borobudur, which tends to confirm Nieuwenkamp's theory. The lake area fluctuated with time and the study also proves that Borobudur was near the lake shore c. 13th and 14th centuries. River flows and volcanic activities shape the surrounding landscape, including the lake. One of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, Mount Merapi, is in the direct vicinity of Borobudur and has been very active since the Pleistocene.

Recent record: Merapi erupted in 2010, up to now (April 2011) occurred a cold lava flow in several areas.
